同學作品分享-Canvaswork格繡

這週來分享同學的作品，是暑期密集班【註】認識的Lori，我很喜歡她的構圖和色彩搭配，非常能夠展現出Canvaswork的特色。尤其是那些螢光橘的小魚們，在湛藍大海裡的點綴效果十分可愛。

Lori一開始沒有料想到需要自己準備設計圖，所以就被帶去圖書室尋找想要呈現在Canvaswork上的圖片來源。而她馬上就選擇了一幅有著珊瑚礁石和美麗魚群的海底景致，並且決定另外加了隻海龜來當作視覺焦點和平衡整個構圖。也因此，在後來選擇針法的時候，都盡可能考量將目光帶領到海龜的身上。

她很開心能透過這個作品，學習到更多有別於以往所知道的刺繡，而這個類別非常需要有關於色彩光影變化和色調之間轉換的知識。她選了簡單的Florentine stitch，然後搭配三種不同深淺的藍色來嘗試色調之間的轉換。

首先全部的繡線都用第一種藍色（最淺），然後依序混入下一種藍色的繡線，最後再到第三種藍色（最深），這樣可以讓藍色隨著海的深度而增加份量來製造景深。她同時也試著使用一些斜角（左下右上的角度）的方形針法來帶出Leaf Stitch（像葉子形狀的針法），並且透過垂直和斜角的Leaf Stitch導引我們的視覺能夠朝向海龜而去。

最後，在裝裱的時候，她發現必須避免背面的繡線跑到預留的邊緣區域裡，因為透過網格的底布都會被看見。

I was surprised when I showed up that I would have to have my own design and was sent to the library to find a picture that I would like to recreate on canvas. I was immediately drawn to an underwater scene but it only had a complex reef scene with several interesting fish. I decided to add a turtle to balance the composition and to provide the major focus. Everything I did when making choices for stitches were to draw the eye up to the turtle.

The best thing about this project was that I learned how much I didn't know about stitching. The project had requirements to display knowledge in both shading and transitions. I did the shading by starting with a simple Florentine stitch pattern that used three different shades of blue. I started with all strands of the first shade and replaced them one at a time to the second and then to the third shade. This made the color more intense blue as the depth increased. I don't think I was nearly as successful with the stitch transitions, but I did try to make a sequence of square stitches in a diagonal direction to bring your eye to the leaf stitches. The leaf stitches were both vertical and diagonal to toward your eye toward the turtle.

Finally, during the mounting, I learned that I should not have any tails that trail into the exposed canvas along the edges. I need to make sure to end tails into the center and not to the outside because they can be seen through the canvas.

註：暑期密集班原則上是同一類別會集中在一個班級裡，但Blackwork和Canvaswork是一起上課的。這兩個類別都是屬於數格子來刺繡的，基本的前置和後續處理步驟差不多。
